As you can see, I've managed to assemble two cute, seasonably appropriate outfits thanks to several fruitful trips to the thrift store.
On the left, we have a vibrant orange cotton blend tee with a keyhole accent. I thrifted this quite a while ago, but let it sit in my closet in the hopes of finding something delightful to pair with it. Then along came this brand new Target-designer label Kirna Zabete high-low skirt from Goodwill. It's bright and breezy, perfect for summer.
And I'm calling this look on the right The Sassy Librarian. A vintage structured polka dot skirt and a brand-new with tags Anne Klein bow tied cardigan. Both from Goodwill--well two different Goodwills, technically. But both cute, cute, cute.
So I've assembled a punchy and light summer look and a dark but delicate outfit for fall. And each set of clothing was under $8!!

In both the thrifted summer and fall ensembles, I spent more on the accessories than I did the actual clothing! I am a sucker for cute costume jewelry. I'll be the first to admit it. And what full-figured gal doesn't love an oversized pair of shades? I know I do.
It's been a while since I've scored any major secondhand accessories, so I've had to improvise. And while spending a measly $12 on a necklace that I love isn't a crime...it's kind of crazy to think that in styling these two outfits I spent a combined $26 bucks (well, $26.25 if you include the thrifted vintage tote). That's $26...on the accessories alone.
Maybe I'm just in a secondhand slump when it comes to finding thrift store jewelry. But I shouldn't feel guilty about enjoying some time at the mall for a little accessorizing, right?

Haha, feel no shame, I've done stuff like that before. Like the time I spent the same amount on one dress as 7 or so thrifted ones, makes you feel like a frugal advocate failure. But we spend less on everything so we can splurge on pieces that makes us happy.
Have you tried Etsy hunting for cute jewelry or checking out local handmade haunts, which must be around in abundance in a big city like Philly? I have friends who make the cutest accessories and sell it for pennies on the dollar.
See, I know you'd understand, Van! That's kind of the way I look at it, too. I save so much in one area, I can maybe slightly splurge elsewhere from time to time.
I do enjoy browsing around Etsy, but have this thing with holding the items and getting a feel for their weight, length, size....how they fit. You get the idea. I think I will look into some local crafters and jewelry makers when I can. Actually I plan on visiting a really huge flea market next month...maybe I'll even find something nice there!

Not at all, dear Jackie. Just as certain items we need to make a recipe or whole meal cost more than others at the supermarket, so too is it common for various elements of one's outfits to come with higher price tags. I think those are very reasonable prices for such lovely pieces of jewelry, and that the overcost of both looks is hat doffingly impressive. Enjoy your small jewelry splurges and revel in how much you've saved on other items in your wardrobe.

Thanks, Jessica. I do like to think my knack for frugal finds extends past the thrift store. It's just sometimes strange for me to crunch the numbers and find that I'm paying nearly double for the accessories than the actual clothing. But I think that if the overall look is assembled cheaply...and with style, it's still well within the budget!
